Hey Coach Patton, your seat is on fire

I've seen all I've needed to see now.

It's time for NIU to take off the gloves and fire Ricardo Patton.

In now his third season as the men's basketball coach, the Huskies have looked worse than ever. Sure, sure it's only six games into the season (they're 1-5, by the way), Xavier Silas is out, and new recruit Tony Nixon has looked good thus far.

Tread lightly Patton supporters.

The Huskies in his three seasons have been marred by lack of discipline and most importantly a lack of wins.

Fact is, this team still cannot make free-throws (53.2 percent so far) and have sent opponents to the line 26 more times (they're shooting 63.8 percent). The Huskies have taken 117 3-point shots to just 101 of their opponents, connecting on a miserable 23.9 percent.

On top of that, NIU has turned ball over 104 times in five games. That's over 20 a game. Let's not even discuss the fact that Jake Anderson is outrebounding Sean Kowal 52-38.

It's easy to blame these numbers on a lack of talent, but the talent is there. At nearly 7-foot tall Kowal should be dominating, especially in MAC play. But there's a reason he didn't last in the Big 12 at Colorado and we're seeing it now. He's not aggressive and nobody seems to want to step out their way to enforce that.

The free-throw numbers, the turnovers and the asinine amount of 3-pointers a game also go directly on Patton. It's real simple, coach, it's called practice. Obviously free-throws aren't practiced enough. Obviously this team either isn't comfortable or doesn't grasp your system. And obviously, you haven't taught them to look for good shots and that a team doesn't always need the 3-ball to climb back.

But no, the Huskies have made the same mistakes for three seasons now. Those mistakes are now called habit and a lot harder to break.

It goes to show, non-disciplined coach leads to a non-disciplined team.

That has shown throughout Patton's tenure at NIU. In two full seasons, NIU is 16-42. Sure, Rob Judson was 74-101 in his career but he turned a 5-win team to a 12-win team in one season. Followed that up with a 17-win season, a 10-20 season, 11-17, 17-11 and the first MAC West Division title in NIU history. Judson knew how to win with what he had.

Judson's recruiting ties to Illinois were also undeniable. A tie that would have brought DeKalb High School center Jordan Threloff to NIU, not Illinois State, where Judson currently coaches. And Patton? Since the days of Chauncey Billups, the old coach hasn't had too standout recruits. It was obvious when he left Colorado and landed at NIU what kind of players he recruited there. The Big 12 led kids to CU, not Patton. Those who followed Patton were Kowal and eventually Silas, nobody else. Silas tried staying his sophomore year at CU, but was dismissed from the team after averaging 12 points a game his freshman year and 9.7 his sophomore year.

Listen, I'm all for new coaches and giving them time with a new program. But when a coach all but runs out the recruits of the previous coach and continues to run that team into the ground, it is time for a change. Rich Rodriguez didn't send his Lloyd Carr guys packing and Jerry Kill has taken Joe Novak's boys to two straight bowl games.

The constant lack of discipline from a coach who preaches it, combined with a constant lack of wins, a constant brush off of the local media after road losses and a constant feeling of disappointment within the program is reason enough to send him packing.

This is the telltale year for Patton. It's his recruits (Silas, Nixon, Kowal, Mike DiNunno* and Najul Ervin) now running the show, minus the lone starting Judson holdout in Anderson. *[DiNunno was originally offered by Judson, but Patton kept the offer on the table as he committed in 2007]. It is time we finally get a clear picture of the future of NIU basketball and what type of talent Patton will bring to the MAC without the lure of the Big 12 to aide his recruiting.

If the start to this season is any indication of the rest of it, or the rest of Patton's tenure, we're in for a long ride. I say, it's time to get off that ride before nausea takes over and see if someone else can put the pieces together.

U of C

One of my friends who is Colorado alum called me laughing hysterically when he heard we hired Patton and now reminds me all the time why he was a terrible coach. I’m not sure why NIU can’t field a competitive team, I had high hopes for Judson as well, it gets aggravating especially with the pre season predictions. I was in Champaign for the NIU/U of I game and we showed some spirit at times but were missing a veteran. Find a coach he can recruit the public league!

Silas

I have heard that a lot about Patton since he “did not seek extension” from CU. The Big 12 was such a lure for kids who weren’t Oklahoma and Texas material. Patton caught lightning in a bottle with Chauncey Billups too.

It worries me, to be 110 percent honest, that some NIU fans tribe Xavier Silas as the savior of the program for these next two seasons. From what I’ve heard, this guy can be a diva when he doesn’t get his way. I think we’d be very naive to believe a new coach at CU was the only one stirring the pot that eventually led to Silas’ dismissal. You better believe Silas wasn’t a role model team player, because with his talent, any coach would tried to keep him in the Big 12.

Just sayin’ though.

Great post Mike.

I’m right there with you. I was holding out for this season expecting improvement. Not hoping for improvement, but expecting improvement.

So far, through 6 games, this looks exactly like last year’s team. It can’t shoot and can’t hold on to the ball. I have no idea how you can miss on so many recruits who seemingly have no ability to shoot a basketball whether it be from the free throw line, behind the arc, or in the paint.

Now, I’ve yet to get to see a game this year so my “opinion” is strictly fromed from what I read hear and what I see in the box score. Typically, I don’t like forming a strong opinion without having seen the team play, but this shooting percetange (and amount of shots) is apauling.

Anyway, I’m expecting to get out to the Convo Center some time in the middle of January. Part of me is hoping Patton is gone and I can get good handle on what type of talent is actually on the team.

I suppose if they did fire Patton mid-season, they’d probably name an interim coach and then find a replacement after the season.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

damnit.

My bad Jerry. I didn’t even look. I just assumed.

Well, awesome post Jerry!

That’s why I rec’d it the second I read it.

I

Have to be honest I don’t know a lot about basketball so I don’t know who they should bring in. With that said I am just tired of them losing!

This years team is frustrating

I make it to the home games and some road games and this team is frustrating. It seems like we have more talent than other teams but we don’t know how to win. Last night is a good example. We got cold in the second half and they got hot and it seemed our guys gave up. Dinunno took a couple of bad 3 pt. shots and missed and we fell behind big. Anderson can’t do it all himself. The guys played their hearts out on D early but a few things don’t go their way and it seems like they get down. They are losing to teams they should or could beat. The fan turn out is pathetic as well. I know it was a week night but where are the students? There were more Bradley fans then our own. The students that show up don’t cheer. At Northwestern, there were a lot of our students there wearing “Patton’s Platoon” t-shirts. More students showed up for a game in the suburbs (at NU) than here. I don’t know what will change that. Some wins, I guess. We need some wins before the MAC schedule starts because they won’t be able to just turn it on then.

Winning will improve attendance.

I’d also like to point out that I really don’t like getting too down on the players since they’re doing their best (I presume) and most of them are 20 years old or younger. However, with that being said, I have to say that I have yet to see one thing Mike DiNunno does well. He can’t shoot worth a damn from anywhere on the court and he can’t handle the basketball.

I’m not looking forward to another 2+ years of him.

Nothing against our guys

I don’t get down on the guys, I know they are doing their best and they seem like good kids. However, I am pointing out that they don’t seem to have confidence in themselves yet. I think that is something that should change with some wins. I liked when Coach Patton first came here and tried to instill the protect the home court by having the guys sleep there and it seemed to help at first. It doesn’t help playing in front of a small crowd. I also hope Dinunno’s slump is just that – a slump. He was lights out at times last year but can’t catch a break or hit a bucket this year thus far. Hopefully, Silas’ return will give them all a boost.

Not so fast...

I do agree that we have looked terrible this year and we have not seen much of an improvement since Patton has gotten here when looking at the record. However, Patton has a lot of talent here and they are still young. Patton does need to turn that talent into smart competitive players. Looking at who we have played this year, I’m not surprised that we are 1-5. I did expect a win against SEMO, but we have played some teams close like U of I, Northern Iowa, and Bradley for at least half the game. Patton will turn the program around. I would give him at least one more year. Our schedule gets easier after Minnesota and with Silas coming back, we will bounce back. I love your blog, but I think your jumping the gun.

Pathetic

NIU Hoops has been pathetic long enough. Does TJ Lux have any eligibilty remaining. I though Judson would have turned things around given his local connections, but that didn’t work out. Patton hire was absurd. I’d like to see them take a run at McClain, the assistant down in Champaing. He has HS connections and state connections which is what I think we really need. Certainly not Patton.

by NIU_Roadkill on Dec 4, 2009 2:45 PM CST reply actions

Wayne McClain?

Never would happen.

He’s not really NCAA D-1 head coaching material. He’s there for one reason and one reason only. He can recruit about any kid out of Peoria he wants to (i.e., his connections are in Peoria, not all over the state or in other states).

Plus, he was at the center of the whole cover-up of the car crash that almost killed Brian Carlwell. He’s not a guy I’d like running the program.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
