Silas and Anderson Lead Huskies over Eagles 77-69

Game Recap

After a hard fought first half plagued by fouls and turnovers, the Huskies (7-8, 3-0 MAC) finally found their groove in the second half.  Northern Illinois put together a 14-5 run to start the second half to push the lead to 50-39 and never looked back.  Solid free throw shooting down the strectch for the Huskies proved to be the difference as Eastern Michigan (9-7, 1-2 MAC) struggled from 3 point range (4-20 for the game) trying to climb back in the game.

Player of the Game:  Jake Anderson 22 points (8-14 FG, 6-6 FT), 7 rebounds, 2 assists. This one was a tough one to choose, as Silas also had a nice ball game.  In the end I had to give it to Jake Anderson.   Anderson shook off a rough first half where he sat out most of the time because of foul trouble, by coming out in the second half scoring 8 of the Huskies first 14 points to put the lead into double digits.  Anderson also led the team in rebounds.

Huskies won because: Xavier Silas and Jake Anderson.  The 1-2 combo for the Huskies combined for 47 points and were 14-14 FT in the second half to help seal the victory.

Stepping up: Ante Dzepina played a solid game filling in for Sean Kowal and Michael Fakuade while both big men struggled to stay on the court early in the game because of foul trobule.  The Croatian Sensation played a season high 18 minutes, finishing the game with 4 PTS, 6 REB, and 2 BLKS.

Stat line of the game: Northern Illinois 24-29 FT (82.8%).  NIU shot above 80% from the charity stripe for the first time this season.  The bulk of that shooting came from Silas and Anderson who combined for 16-17.

1st Place in the West: With Central Michigan's loss to Western Michigan, the Huskies assume sole possession of the 1st place in the MAC West Division.

Next up for the Huskies: NIU will travel to Toledo (3-13) to face the young Rockets squad on Wednesday @ 6PM.

Having been at the game yesterday.

I’d have to give Player of the Game to Xavier Silas.

He absolutely carried the Huskies through the first half. Plus, on a number of occasions, he got the ’ol “and 1” by making absolutely ridiculous shots down low.

Kudos to Anderson for not getting frustrated with the early foul trouble and coming back to put up 22 (honestly, I didn’t even realize he had that many points). He definitely was a big part of the lead they put up in the 2nd half. But Silas was dominant and, I think, he only came out of the game once for like a minute. When the team needed someone (and with Anderson on the bench and EMU being very physical), Silas put them on his shoulders and kept the game close through the 1st.

Now, on to DiNunno. I’m not sure what to say about the kid. I know he’s had some off the court worries to deal with and I wish him the best. But he frustrates me (bordering on “irritates me”) with the way he plays. He does pretty well on defense (Medlock was really good, btw) but his offensive decision making is maddening at times. Credit to the kid for being confident and fearless, but he’s simply got to do better.

And I always like seeing Dzepina. He’s not great, but he just does things correctly. And he bangs. Successful college teams need a guy like Ante Dzepina. He can put it in the basket if he has to, but he just does the dirty work in the paint and loves doing it. He’s a bigger and more important part of this team than I figure most give him credit for.

Overall, had a great time at the game yesterday. About a month ago, when I was planning this, I was figuring on a Huskie ass kicking. But there must really be something in playing that brutal non-conference schedule, right? They really look like a different team right now. And I like it.

Btw, only one senior on the team (Najul Ervin) really makes me excited for next year, but I’m still excited to see what transpires this year.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Both Jake & X were great

You could go either way, but the electrifying way Jake came off the bench at the beginning of the 2nd half pretty much put the Huskies over the top in this one.

Interesting note: DiNunno was a shooting guard in high school and had to learn to play PG when he came here. 7 assists and 4 steals is enough to accept a sub-par shooting performance. He just needs to stop shooting 3’s and driving to the basket more. When he did that he looked good yesterday.

Dzepina and Ervin are both seniors.

Hmmm.

In the program I had, Dzepina was listed at a junior. Must’ve been a typo or something.

Anyway, good point about DiNunno. He did look good driving the basket. Although once he went in with the trees and got fed the basketball, but other than that, I was impressed with his fearlessness going inside and his toughness once he got there. A couple of good layups (3 i can remember).
