Just awesome..
I realize it doesn’t mean the MAC is good, or on the way back, but it’s definitely better then a loss. The MAC doesn’t really deserve any respect right now, so I won’t say this one gave us anything, but for the future I think this game is more important then some give us credit.
Next year if Ohio cleans up and goes something like 28 – 6, which with Cooper only being a sophomore it’s very possible. Then say they lose in the MAC tournament, they have a much better chance of getting an at large bid. When the selection committee is looking for an at large team, Ohio will probably get the nod in a close contest. I mean this is clearly hypothetical, and really Ohio will probably just win the MAC out-right to make it a non-issue, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Every win for the MAC right now is a big win as we try to regain some ground we lost the last few years.

Congrats Bobcats!
I’m kinda responding to Grinder here in an indirect way…
Why is the MAC not a big time player in the “mid-major” basketball conferences? What is it that keeps the MAC from being the MVC (or even the OVC?) or the WCC? Is it that those conferences don’t have D-1 football programs and the schools focus all their energy into the basketball programs?
I’d think a successful football program should really help basketball recruiting. It’s a big event on campus and gives your school more exposure.
Whatever…I don’t konw, but I’ve scratched my head wondering about this for quite some time.

Not a bad question
I suppose the fact they put a much bigger portion of funding towards bball probably has something to do with it, but I can’t imagine that’s the whole story.
I guess as the MAC focused on keeping up with the big boys in football, perhaps basketball just wasn’t as big a deal. And to be honest, personally I’d rather have a big time football program, then basketball, so I guess I understand the logic, but I’d think there is more to it. It’s not like SIU or Northern Iowa don’t have solid football programs, or that are basketball team has been underfunded.
I’d find it hard to believe NIU’s facilities don’t compete with MVC and OVC teams, and our coach has a decent salary. The convo along with the A&APC are very nice facilities for the basketball players. I’ve never been to an MVC or OVC stadium, so maybe I’m wrong, but I’d think we compare pretty favorably to most of their teams in regards to coaching salary and facilities.
I’d like to know if this has been discussed else where, it doesn’t make much sense to me either to be honest.

This would have been one of the last upsets I would of picked………I heard its the biggest win for Ohio in a couple decades……….When was the last time NIU won a NCAA tournament game?
NIU is 0-3 all-time in the NCAA tournament
Losses in 1982, 1991 & 1996
Red and Black Attack - Northern Illinois Pride
Texas Tech cheated in '96
and we’d have had no problem beating North Carolina in the 2nd round…..

1982
Was also the last time we won a MAC tourney game (we won the tourney that year).
