Akron to celebrate most soul-crushing loss in NIU history...

...when the Huskies come to visit this weekend:

AKRON, Ohio – During Saturday's Homecoming football game against Northern Illinois, The University of Akron Department of Athletics will honor members of the 2005 MAC Championship football team in an on-field presentation. GoZips.com will be interviewing select members of the 2005 squad in the days leading up to GAMEDAY. Saturday's contest between the Zips and Huskies kicks off at 6 p.m. ET at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field.

The 2005 Zips closed out the regular season by winning three of their final four contests to earn a date against Northern Illinois in the MAC title game. Down by six with 10 seconds remaining, quarterback Luke Getsy found receiver Domenik Hixon on a 36-yard touchdown to key Akron's first-ever MAC championship. The Zips would go on to play Memphis in the Motor City Bowl.

The Akron Zips must want to lose their homecoming game bad.  Really bad.  I was in attendance for the game in Detroit and for a fact the end of that game was the worst sports moment that I had felt in my entire life.  Maybe it was the fact I was in Detroit in the middle of winter, but I'm pretty sure it was the game.  Garrett Wolfe had 42 carries for 270 yds but our defense couldn't stop squat.

Yeah, I posted it.

We had our first MAC Championship since 1983 in grasp, but got it taken away by the Kangaroos at the last second.  Even though nobody still is on the team or coaching staff from then, this is still an insult to the program by Akron's athletic administration.  What were they thinking?

The Zips must be crushed this weekend!!!

the worst part

must have been having to listen to Mike Tirico and THEN lose.

Wow, that was a buzz kill. I’ve tried to forget that moment; couldn’t believe it then, can’t believe it now. I was kind of overlooking the Akron game; not now. Turn our RB’s loose on them.

What an insult

I want to win by 4 touchdowns. Give the ball to Spann every down.

By the way, we’re 14 point favorites.

Congrats and welcome to SBN. I’ve been waiting for you to be the next MAC team on board. Who’s going to be the next???

Who cares! Let’s fill it up.

Huskies....don't look ahead to Temple

take care of business in Akron, then get ready for Bernard Pierce and company
Note: let’s control the ball/clock…..not just 23 minutes of game clock

Don’t forget Bell; 36 yards on three carries off the bench. Kill wasn’t at NIU for the Akron championship; I don’t know if he has the same venom we do. Maybe the little ceremony the Zips put on will fire up the HUskies big time.

Well said

That was the most heart stopping, worst sports feeling, gut wrenching (insert whatever awful way to describe) moment for me as well. I was there with my dad and we were just in disbelief. How could that happen??? To this day, I complain about Ray Smith not covering over the top. Anyway, that was definently a huge buzz kill. I remember the other fans at the game already planning to come back to Detroit for the bowl game. I have hated Akron and Hixon ever since.

By the way...

This is my first time watching that dreaded play since being at the game and I just noticed Hixon losses the ball as he is coming to a stop. In the current NFL, they would have ruled he did not complete the process of catching the ball. That still sucks but some luck would have been nice.
