This has to be on Jerry Kill
And his lack of ability to actually recruit defensive talent.

Although I hate to blame the predecessor, I agree with you. Great 4th quarter by the O, Harnish is a true leader.
We’ve lost two games were we put up over 40 points. Toledo and WMU and going to run through our D like it’s nothing.
Does anyone realize there was over 1,100 yards of offense in this game?
You can HOPE for a 6-6 season
and unfortunately it could take a rebuilding yr next yr…… we lose a lot in our offense next yr
Not a pretty picture
Yes, let’s blame the previous coaching staff that won 11 games and left the new coaching staff an excellent offense to work with.
It has nothing to do with the current coaching staff. We only gave up 48 points to a team averaging 14 points.
This new coaching staff has got to go! They’ve only been here five games and have already ruined a good program.
With Players recruited by the previous coach Joe Novak
I think there was a reason Jerry jumped so quickly, because he didn’t want anybody to find out that he’s not very good at recruiting.

Thanks for bringing this topic up. It sure looks like Jerry Kill left the cupboard bare of defensive players and bailed before he could take the immediate blame for what is happening now. Statisically, this may be worst defense in NIU history by the time the season is over. I am reserving judgement on Coach Doeren but giving up 78 points and 900+ yards to the piles of crap we have played the last two weeks is testing my patience. Maybe the lack of talent is preventing the making of any adjustments. The saddest fact is that we are wasting the talents of maybe the most dynamic offense we have ever had. 6 wins would be a miracle at this point.
kill didnt leave because the"cupboard was bare" he left because he was coaching a mac school and a big ten school called and gave him life changing money, every MAC coach would have left.
the offense is good
the defense is bad
but the defense is also missing devon butler and tyrone clark. its not like we are a defensive juggernaut every year, we cant sustain the loss of two starting linebackers plus the loss of the seniors who graduated
our defense was never that good, it was ok, but it wasnt great. right now its bad, but I dont see how that is doerens fault YET. we need to make some adjustments and we need to stop giving up huge plays, but for now, we’re just not that good on defense
I agree it is a shame that we have a dynamic offense that is going to be wasted.
And if you’re worried about the defense this year. Wait for the offense next year, we have nothing behind harnish, huge dropoff next year
Our defense was never that good?
Scoring defense every year Kill was here:
2008: 14th in the nation @ 18.00 ppg
2009: 30th in the nation @ 21.62 ppg
2010: 14th in the nation @ 18.93 ppg
Our scoring defense during the injury decimated 2007 Novak year compared to now:
2007: 86th in the nation @ 30.83 ppg
2011: 116th in the nation @ 39.60 ppg

I agree 100% that the kill defense stats are better. the talent and experience on the d line was better as well as the linebackers, those defense also benefited from an offense that held the ball for longer periods of time
and you are right to point out those stats, they were good, at times, i seem to remember our share of struggles on d in certain big games though, the last 2 kill teams were much more talented than their mac opponents
this team lost a lot on D – i am worried that our “defensive” biased coach doesnt seem to be making adjustments, or maybe we’re just not that talented
i still disagree with the notion that kill left the cupboard bare or departed because of the loss of talent, butler and clark were excellent players and will be when they come back and the offense is loaded, he left for a better job, and if things get better for doeren I think its a fair bet his tenure here will be short lived, but he is going to need to do some good recruiting to fill the holes we have on the d line and secondary
I disagree that Kill left the cupboard bare as well. It’s not his fault that seven defensive starters graduated and another two had offseason issues that kept them out this season. Kill won with the players he had. Now it is time for Doeren to do the same. Doeren inherited a good program with a great offense. Was he somehow supposed to inherit a team that returned all 24 starters? That’s not how things work.
I’m very concerned about the coaching and gameplan though. Every game i hope to see some improvement but after five games we keep trotting out the same awful defense and special teams.
Our offensive line that returned everyone also does not look as dominate as last season. Last season the line was destroying teams in the run game. Now they just look average.

"Was he somehow supposed to inherit a team that returned all 24 starters?"
No, but it’d have been nice to inherit a team with defensive players ready to step into starting roles.
Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.

Doreen is a Head Coach!
I went to the game at NIU last weekend when they could just beat Cal Poly. I watched the coachIng staff and they had no clue what they are doing. Dave Doeren still acts like an assistant coach instead of the Head Coach. He never took charge! I am still not sure why Compher is still AD? NIU just lost all respect in the BCS! Will this be the end of what Joe Novak was building? Stay tuned to watch the Huskies fall to the bottom of the MAC!!!!!!
Fundamentals
Speed is important, but speed without fundamentals results in what we saw yesterday. The UW defense, which Doeren coached, may not be the fastest but they are always in the right spots, and make plays when they get there! Our tackling is beyond bad. In time I think Doeren will figure it out and get football players in the right positions.
double down
give to the HASF and buy tickets. give him the tools to recruit.
Good point.
I’m buying some tickets plus writing a check. We can’t be fair-weather fans. Sure, I’m mad about how this season is going but I think Doeren will improve things.
BTW, anyone notice the Minn. game? 51-0; Minn. lost
