NIU Huskies run past Toledo Rockets 63-60, take MAC West lead

Photo

It was the highest scoring game (in regulation) in MAC regular season history.

The Northern Illinois Huskies started off the game with two touchdown returns by TommyLee Lewis of 100 and 95 yds, the top two returns in Glass Bowl history.

The Huskies and Rockets combined for a total 1,122 yds with the Rockets slightly ahead 589-532 because of all the craziness that happened on special teams.

Chandler Harnish threw for 265 yds and 6 (SIX!) TDs and rushed for 133 yds as well. Nathan Palmer was a stud catching 4 balls for 120 yds and 3 touchdowns.

Toledo QB Austin Dantin threw for 322 yds and 5 TDs on his own, all to WR Eric Page.

It was back and forth all game long, with the Huskies able to run down the clock at the end with Perez Ashford grabbing a 4 yd reception. Kickoffs were an issue all game long, but the Huskies were able to kick it deep on the final possession, not allowing the Toledo offense to even get a chance at a field goal.

NIU improves their all-time record against Toledo to 10-29, 4-11 since NIU re-joined the MAC in 1997.

It's only the third win by Northern Illinois at Toledo in the Glass Bowl ever. The last win @ the Glass Bowl for the Huskies was in 2005 when they also made the MAC Championship. If the Huskies can win their next three games, they'll be there again.

What are your thoughts on the game?

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a EPIC game… I paced in front of my TV for 3 1/2 hours. Glad we had a chance to showcase our offense on the national stage like that… might be needed to secure us a bowl later this year.

I will gladly

eat my words……in earlier posts I predicted a Huskie loss.
We have an unbelievable offense, and some real stud WR’s. Our defense? well, I saw poor tackling and guys getting faked out of their shoes

It was truly “last team with the ball wins”……actually those last two penalties against us on the final drive turned out to be a real positive – it ran the clock down
We now have a shot at the MAC championship…..BUT, let’s not get too cocky, and forget about the BG game next wk…..guard against a letdown.

As I read your comment, I was totally expecting you to say...

Lots of thoughts

Wow, that was a crazy game…I can’t believe they managed to pull out the win in the end. As we were discussing in the game thread, it’s unreal to actually have NIU win one like this. We’ve all seen them blow so many close games. I honestly went in to the game figuring if they kept it close I’d be happy. I love beating Toledo, especially in the Glass Bowl.

I like being in control of our MAC destiny, I just hope the team doesn’t let up in the last 3 games of the year. BG could be a letdown game next week. I also think the display put on by the offense helps our bowl chances. Nothing will make a game more interesting than bringing in a team with an explosive offense.

In an unrelated note, the Toledo fan with the 3D rocket sign looks super creepy.

I think having the rest of our games on ESPN is a good thing for our chances at winning out and not letting down.

Knowing the games are national should keep the players hyped up and not look past the games.

Before the game, I thought the Huskies would lose. At halftime, I thought the Huskie would probably lose. With 8 seconds left, I thought we could still lose.

But we won. How many of those games have we lost? The 2005 MAAC to (cough) Akron? The 2010 MAAC?

And to beat Turdkedo in the glASS Bowl? On ESPN? In 3D? Priceless!.

Our D is still horrible, but I’ll worry about the tomorrow.

whew!

I commented to my daughter during game (she was there) we’d need 50+ points. At halftime I said “Maybe 60+”. The D couldn’t stop Toledo & it looked way too easy (esp giving them a very short field) for them to score. BUT, offense played one heck of a game. My heart got a workout in fear of this season’s collapses. Hey, a win is a win!

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, 1/2 pack of cigarettes...it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Football or Track

You win as a team and you lose as a team. The Huskies are currently conference leaders, only one team in our division can make that claim. I watched the game twice now (I know get a life). Our Offense is off-the-chart incredible, and the coaching staff has devised a scheme which takes full advantage of one of the nation’s best QBs, a strong OL, and a talent group of skill players. The down side of this hurry-up, no huddle, run a play before the Defense resets, approach is that time of possession is compromised. When the opponent has a similar strategy (which most of our opponents, including UT, do) a track meet breaks out, and the number of plays run, skyrockets. This is today’s football, like it or not. In a traditional, old-school grind it out, huddle up offense, a 15 play drive could take 12 minutes of clock. With today’s offense a 15 play drive could take less than 5 minutes of clock. On average each NIU play (the play itself plus the time between snaps) took 25 seconds. Thus the play counts are incredibly high. Our tackling must improve, but Toledo’s offense, like ours, gets great athletes in space forcing the defense to make open field tackles. Durante for example made several great plays, but we will remember the play where a gifted receiver made him look silly on an open field tackle. Finally, UT ran nearly 90 offensive plays, unlike past games, we stayed with the same nickel package and same personnel particularly at LB. Bass, who has played very well of late, played very little, and Santa I believe had two tackles on only 2 defensive plays. The rest of the game it was Schiller and Delegal. They were out there for a nearly 90 plays. UT’s Offensive Line was dominant. In the end a win is a win!

awesome and infuriating

really exciting game…im sure a lot of fans outside of the mac would have been watching this one, so thats cool….

could not have been more pissed at the defense….the tackling, my god, was awful….the athleticism of the players on the offensive side of the ball for both teams was good and their offensive options are deep, but cmon…some of these touchdowns were pathetically easy…safeties for toledo just got destroyed and we were exploited in the middle of the field and by eric page in the redzone. thought our front four were decent…some decent pressure on mobile quarterbacks like dantin and owens, but they had a good amount of run stops up the middle…also a few tipped passes that were needed in big moments so that was good

anyways its a win and we control our destiny in the MAC so party

Goldberg: Be careful man, it almost hit me that time!
Charlie Conway: Goldberg, you're the goalie. It's supposed to hit you.
Goldberg: Does that sound stupid to anyone else?
