Huskie Hoops - A New Low
Wow, this is really impressive......12 pts. in the first half! Are you kidding me? Who the hell is Seattle?
This program ( I'm using the word loosely) has reached a new low as far as I'm concerned. How can you expect to recruit some quality talent when you see these types of games? Please help me out here, why would any decent player even consider NIU as a basketball destination?
Then I ask the question: How can you not fire Patton? then immediately another raises it's ugly head - what coach wants this job?
This is a real train wreck.

I don't know.
I’m answering all of your questions with one answer.
I don’t know.
The only silver lining I can think of is that this program has no where to go but up and in a league like the MAC, there is room for that growth. I mean, we’re not DePaul in the Big East getting railroaded every night. We’re in the MAC. A good conference that has it’s ebbs and flows.
A good coach who wants to work hard can improve this team and one would have to believe that it shouldn’t take too long. Although, outside of Nate Rucker, I really don’t like anyone who would be returning so maybe it would take a little longer than I think.

Frustration and disappointment
Those two words sum up my view of NIU’s hoops…..really frustrating when you look at what the school has accomplished in football…..and really disappointing when they bring in coaches who you expect to turn things around
When was the last season this program had a winning record?
Bottom line: I don’t have the answer, but I know one thing…..Patton is NOT the answer
Hire a former Alum in your backyard!!
They need to hire Carl Armato and here is my rationale – First – he is a former alum and somebody that has a proven track record of winning and recruiting at every level he has coached – and bleeds red and black. Second – NIU is going to have to eat the last year of Patton’s contract ($300,000) and Coach Armato would probably come to NIU for half that – no way you can get another so-called big name coach to come in for $150,000. Third – he is a local guy that knows the area and has Chicag/Peoria/Rockford recruiting connections – stop hiring guys that aren’t connected to the area or NIU – it hasn’t worked!! Carl is well-respected by the coaching circles, the community of Dekalb, and former players – he is a teacher of the game!! To me it would take guts to do but it is a no-brainer!!
Just because someone went to NIU doesn't mean he's better than someone who didn't
however, with that being said. I’m all for anyone new. And young blood is just fine with me.
Although, I will say that I’d prefer to hire someone who’s only head coaching experience is something above high school and a few years at a junior college.
Sure, he assisted at NIU under Judson, but that was a while ago.
IMO, there are much better candidates than Armato. Hell, is he even interested in the job??? Best I can tell, he’s not even coaching now and works for the Rockford School District.

I agree that you don’t want to hire someone just becuase they played and graduated from their Alma Mater – however I know he would have a much deeper investment and passion being back to a place that he spent so much time at – as a student-athlete and coach! I think that means a lot versus hiring another D1 former head coach or assistant that would probably be comintg to NIU just to build their resume – Carl has ties in this area and would probably make this his last stop. He also has a stronger track record then you give him credit for – he has won at every place he has been – and he won at a JC that doesn’t offer scholarships – and was there for twelve years that ended with a 62% winning perecentace – and let’s not forget that when he took over at that JC they were awful!! Also, let’s not forget that the last winning season NIU had was when Carl was an assistant coach here!
He is well respected, would get butts in the seats and would roll his sleeves-up and get this program turned around – the guy can coach and recruit – to me it is an easy hire. I have heard through the grapevine that he is very interested in the position.
Hello, losing column
well, rack up another loss for this team…..where was Silas? is he hurt or what?
this is really sorry…….this program has been going in REVERSE for too long
I don't know about Silas
He didn’t play (as far as I can tell) and he only had like 7 points last game.
anyway, when tim toller is your leading scorer, good luck.
Unfortunatley, we’ve done what I feared. We made it back to the Toledo game looking for a win on Saturday.
This happened last year. They won a couple games in pre-conference ball and then won a couple to start off the conference schedule, then preceeded to lose like 8 in a row. Can we please just get rid of Ricardo Patton now? (meaning at season’s end….or hell, now, who cares).
Sure the team is “young” again, but another year with him as Head Coach is another year we have to wait for anything positive to happen.
