Huskie fans, we are about to enter into a dark and scary place only known as the Ex-X zone. No more Xavier Silas on this team next year. And likely no more coach Ricardo Patton. Losing eight straight games will kind of accelerate that process. 11/3/2009 was a post calling for Ricardo Patton's resignation and here we are today in February 2011 with the same old stuff on the basketball court.
You would think this team would have bounced back from a failed disaster vs the Seattle
Supersonics Redhawks in the bracketbuster. But no, that wasn't the case. NIU was favored by 3 points, but lost the Chips at the convo 64-58.
Things were pretty even for most of the game, but the former part of the second half, Xavier Silas went down with an ankle injury (GREAT photography Mr. Burnes). Ricardo Patton sums it up in this motown reference:
"When you have guys that are backup singers, and now you ask them to be lead singers, sometimes they don't have the voice for it," Patton said.
And then he goes and tries to
make excuses explain what happened to this season:
"There are a lot of things that are outside a coach’s control," Patton said. "We’re going to keep battling, keep coaching and keep fighting. I don’t think anyone would’ve guessed we’d have as many injuries in our program as we’ve had this season.
"I think with a full compliment of players, we’ve played some pretty good basketball. But I don’t think we’ve had our full compliment of guys since (the Akron) game."
And finally, Patton has his preacher moment:
"Show up, tell the truth, and trust in God," Patton said. "That's all we can do right now."
What lost this game (which we were favored in by the way) was 18 turnovers to CMU's 11 and the fact that the Chippewas got to the line 29 times and made 20 of those. In comparison, NIU was only 14 of 20. Without
the only a reliable scoring option down the stretch, this game was pretty much futile. Not to mention DeMarcus Grady started at point guard.
We'll continue to deconstruct the deconstruction of the NIU basketball program a few more times over these next couple weeks.
