NIU Huskies fans have been waiting for a game like this for years. Ever since NIU beat Maryland and Iowa State in 2003 at home, it has taken 9 years to get a team from a BCS conference back in Dekalb. They certainly made it count.
The Northern Illinois Huskies deserved this one over the Kansas Jayhawks considering they outgained them 455-329 yardage-wise. It wasn't a perfect game by any means, but the magic was there to win yet another one at Huskie Stadium. It really felt like the 2003 Maryland game all over again.
James Sims was a big thread for Kansas on the ground scoring two of their touchdowns. Crist only had 150 yds passing, which is impressive for the secondary.
This game was close like 2 out of the 3 games we had played so far this season. Ever so close. I was checking my phone at work and saw that we were down 23-13 early in the fourth quarter due to an interception return for a touchdown by the Jayhawks.
How do you respond to something like that happening? Oh yeah, a 65 yard bomb to Martel Moore. Thank you very much. Matthew Sims continued his clutch kicking with a 44-yard field goal soon after that.
The defense was all over Crist today. He didn't get rid of the ball fast enough and his offensive line flat out collapsed towards the end of the game. Joe Windsor and Alan Baxter both got their licks in late. The Huskies just stuck to their guns and ran Settle and ran Lynch and eventually Settle ran into the endzone to put the Huskies up by a touchdown, a lead that NIU would not let go at the end of the game.
What a huge win for the Northern Illinois Huskies. All we want is some respect and it's a slow burn towards that goal. The team is so close to being undefeated and I'm sure not losing again in this tight conference of the MAC will be a big goal to work towards every week.
I'm so proud of this team and their effort today. It's such a unique team and they are performing better than a few preseason prognosticators. The important games are coming up in the MAC and we can't slip up again if we want to be ranked at the end of the season.
17 straight home wins by the Huskies now. Let's get in that Boise State territory.
