The Dana O'Neil Flip Flop

"I can't fault Maryland and Rutgers in this one... So if you're a financially strapped athletic department like Maryland and someone dangles the Big Ten Network cash register in front of you, you go. If you're a dying-to-win homecoming queen but are a destined-for-princess school like Rutgers and someone wants you (other than your crumbling league), you go. "

Missouri Tigers Are a Real SEC Team Now

Not only are they beating the slop out of an ACC team, but their mascot broke a bowl championship trophy, Orson Charles-style. Welcome! Go 'Dawgs!

A.C.C. Falls Short in a Critical Measure of Success

"Florida State’s national championship in the 1999 season was the last by an A.C.C. team. The Seminoles reached the title game the next year, losing to Oklahoma, and the conference has not sent a team back since. A.C.C. teams have foundered in B.C.S. games, going 2-11, and none are currently ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll. So the A.C.C. is left to play up games like this Saturday’s between No. 13 Clemson and No. 11 Virginia Tech. That game could prove crucial to the teams’ conference title hopes, but it is several steps removed from having an impact on the national title picture." by Adam Himmelsbach of the New York Times

Will Georgia Open the 2011 Season Against Boise State in the Dome?

I have mixed feelings about this possibility. On the one hand, Mark Richt-coached teams typically have performed better when opening the season against quality opposition. On the other hand, when the Bulldogs have beaten out-of-conference opponents in non-rivalry games between the hedges, rematches outside of Athens haven't always ended well (Oklahoma State in Stillwater in 2009, Colorado in Boulder in 2010). On the one hand, I'd love to get out of the now-pointless series with Louisville. On the other hand, I'm not anxious to hose Ole Miss by yanking the Rebels' marquee non-conference matchup out from under them. On the one hand, the Broncos have never beaten an SEC team. On the other hand, Boise State is a program on the rise, and Georgia will head into 2011 after the worst two seasons of the Mark Richt era. Right now, we don't even know if the Bulldogs will make a bowl game this season, and, if they don't, that's a few weeks' worth of extra practices of which they will be deprived, while the Broncos likely will be coming off of back-to-back BCS bowl campaigns. At the end of the day, I would prefer it if this move didn't happen in this way at this time. I don't see the logic of playing a regular-season game in the Georgia Dome against anyone other than a traditional rival from the ACC, I don't see the urgency of rearranging everything so hurriedly rather than arranging a future matchup down the road, and I don't see how this can be squared with Greg McGarity's stated objective of scheduling more home games. In principle, I'm for this matchup; in practice, in this specific instance, I'm against it. Go 'Dawgs!

Pre-Snap Read: Forget the A.C.C., Check Out the MAC

Paul Myerberg reminds us that if there's one college football conference left with 'ACC envy' after this weekend meltdown, it's the MAC.

Pullen Named to USA Men’s Select Team

Senior guard Jacob Pullen was one of 20 college players selected to the USA Men's Select Team that will train against the 2010 USA Basketball Men's National Team during its July 19-24 training camp in Las Vegas, Nev., the organization announced Thursday. Pullen was one of three Big 12 players named to the squad, including Baylor's LaceDarius Dunn and Kansas' Marcus Morris. The league was one of three with more than two players on the team, including the Big Ten (five) and ACC (four).

I'm Going Postal if the 'Dawgs Are Going Coastal

You will never laugh harder at an exhibition of misplaced hubris than you will laugh at this explanation of how the ACC can poach teams (including ours) from the SEC. I especially loved the part about how the league has "peaked." Yeah, four straight national championships'll do that for you. Go to the bathroom before you read this, or you will wet yourself. (Hat tip: Team Speed Kills.) Go 'Dawgs!

The Best December Bowl Game?

I admit I'm biased, but, on the whole, I'd have to go with the Chick-fil-A (nee Peach), which was a down-to-the-wire affair for better than a decade and frequently features desirable matchups between ACC and SEC squads. The Holiday Bowl has its moments, but, for the most part, it signals the start of meaningful bowl games, not the high point of the pre-January tilts. Go 'Dawgs!

Is Clemson Interested in Bolting the ACC for the SEC?

If the dominoes start to fall, would Clemson be interested in leaving the ACC for the SEC? DrB says maybe so. I, for one, would be happy to have 'em. Go 'Dawgs!
