W - Buffalo 3 (8-10, 0-1), Northern Illinois 14 (6-12, 1-0)
Stud LHP Chuck Lukanen goes 7 IP giving up only 5 hits and 2 ER. He also struck out 2 and walked 4.
Freshman RHP Zach Badgley pitched the last 2 innings of relief, giving up 2 hits, 1 ER, 3 K and 1 BB.
Huskies had zero errors in this game for once. Matheyspeak:
"The defense played very well today," Mathey said. "That's a good thing and we hope that continues. It goes hand in hand with pitching and if it continues, we will win some more baseball games. It's a hard thing to do to give a team a lot of outs in an inning and win.
On the offensive side of things, 3B Troy White has been a beast of late going 3 for 4 with a 3B, 4 RBIs, 2 R and a BB in this game.
CF Pat Minogue was also 3 for 4 with a 2B, 3 RBIs and a SO.
1B Dave Minogue helped out as well going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs, 2 R, a BB and a SO.
W - Buffalo 3 (8-11, 0-2), Northern Illinois 9 (7-12, 2-0)
RHP Nick Badgley continues to fill in nicely in the rotation with 6 IP giving up 8 H, 2 ER with 2 Ks and 3 BB.
Glancy, Oates and Zelasko all relieved an inning a piece, giving up 2 hits and 0 R. Zelasko struck out 2.
The only error in this game was a tough, tough fly ball in foul territory that Dave Reynolds dropped in the first base foul-territory. The wind really took it and it was scored an E in the box score.
"Nick is a veteran pitcher and he goes out there with composure and a plan," said Mathey. "He's been pretty good and the nice thing about these first two games is that we've had our starters go pretty deep. We aren't using up the bullpen as much as we had before and we can match strengths with our bullpen and really use matchups better.
LF Jordin Hood had a power surge going 2 for 3 with a 3B and a 2B while also getting HBP twice. He also had 3 RBIs, 2 R and a SO.
2B Joe Buonavolanto went 2 for 3 with a HBP, 1 RBI, 4 R and a SB.
Freshman SS Alex Jones also went 3 for 4 with a R, a SB and a CS.
W - Buffalo 4 (8-12, 0-3), Northern Illinois 5 (8-12, 3-0)
LHP Dave Reynolds went 5.1 IP giving up 5 H, 2 ER with 2 BB and 2 Ks.
RHP Zach Oates had a ridiculous 5 Ks in just 2.2 IP! LHP Tom Zelasko came in and gave up 2 H, a BB and a SO.
3B Troy White allowed a runner on base to score with a fielding error and Alex Beckmann had some trouble fielding in LF late in the game, which led to Buffalo tying the game in the 9th.
Dave Reynolds did it all this game not only starting on the mound, but he also went 2 for 5 with the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the 9th. What a helpful player at any position on the field. He was the only Huskie to get more than one hit, while he also SO twice.
"It was an exciting win," said NIU head coach Ed Mathey. "Dave did a nice job and we're happy to get out of here with a win. He threw a lot of pitches which is why we took him out. They did a nice job in the second inning by getting some hits. What really helped us out is that our pitchers and hitters have done a good job in the last two days which enabled our bullpen to be fresh for a longer stint today. I thought Zach threw the ball real well.
"Dave has always been good with the bat. I was talking to Dave before that ninth inning and told him that the exact situation that came up could happen and he was ready for it. He got a pitch he could handle and did a good job of working into a hitter's count and doing something with it. That was a great at-bat by Dave. He is a very smart and capable player and we are glad to have him here."
CF Jordin Hood went 1 for 2 with a 2B, 2 RBIs and 2 BBs.
SS Alex Jones went 2 for 4 with a 2B, an RBI and a R.
The philosophy from here on out:
"It's a great way to start MAC play," Mathey said. "We are defending our home turf, which is important. Winning the series is big and winning the series 3-0 is even better. We kind of equate MAC play to a game where we have nine weekends or innings. Just because you win the first inning doesn't mean you win the game. So we have to go out next weekend for inning number two against a pretty good Bowling Green team. We won the first inning so hopefully we can take it from here."
Oh, and also make sure to check out one of the better walk-up songs that I've ever heard when C Matt Behren comes to the plate.
NIU is now 15-0 against Buffalo under Ed Mathey
