Northern Illinois goes broke against the Eagles of Ypsilanti 61-75

It hurts doesn't it? Your hopes dashed, your dreams down the toilet. And your fate is sitting right besides you. - Teddy KGB (Rounders)

Teddy knows how to put it.  What NIU had was a pipe dream, nothing more, of winning the MAC West.  After last night we cashed our chips and are ready for a brand new start in the MAC Tournament.

Final - 3.4.2009 1 2 Total
Northern Illinois Huskies 23 38 61
Eastern Michigan Eagles 38 37 75

I don't have too much to say after this humiliating loss.  I thought that we could build some momentum winning games over the EMU and Toledo on Sunday, but I guess we'll just have to hope for the latter.

Let's look at the stats first this time:

NIU from the fioor: 20 of 57 (35.1%)
EMU from the floor: 26 of 53 (49.1%)

NIU from 3: 5 of 21 (23.8%)
EMU from 3: 9 of 14 (64.3%)

Eastern flat-out was just more efficient on the offensive side of things.  Even though Patton was focusing on defense leading up to this game, it was to no avail.

Home court advantage?  Yeah right, EMU only had 724 people attend the game at the 'Evil' Convocation Center.  I did hear them on the radio as they weren't afraid to make a lot of noise.  Maybe it's the reverse factor of home-court advantage of small, sparse crowds of annoying fans just aren't a motivating factor to play as the visiting team.

Maybe Patton should take out the GD measuring stick Gene Hackman-in-Hoosiers style and measure the shack they have up there in Ypsilanti, MI.  Every basketball court has the same dimensions.

Exactly what we need to win a road game

Free Throw Watch:  Even though free throws weren't a big factor in this game, we did an above-average job shooting 16 of 22 (72.7%).  EMU only shot 14 of 24 (58.3%).

So how did the players do individually?

G Jake Anderson did his part scoring 24 pts while going 12 of 15 from the FT line.  Somehow Anderson also led the team in rebounding with 6 tied with PG Mike Dinunno and C Sean Kowal.

F Sean Smith played 34 minutes, provided a nice defensive presence and pulled down 5 boards.  Problem was he shot only 2 of 11 from the field scoring only 4 pts.

Dinunno has officially hit that rookie wall making only 4 of 13 shots out there.  His three-point shooting is either hit or horribly missed airball.  Patton and Storm had goose eggs.

The big men.  What is even going on with these guys?  Kowal only scored 5 pts and grabbed 6 boards in 20 minutes off the bench.  C Ante Dzepina only played 7 minutes after starting for whatever reason, but he was 2 for 2.

We couldn't get anything working down low, forcing us to take harder shots from the outside.  Do-it-all forward for the Eagles Brandon Bowdry owned the paint grabbing down 12 boards.

That's it for my little rant.  Time to redeem ourselves against the Rockets of Toledo this weekend or else fall to the hell and fury that is the bottom of the MAC West.
