2010 Football Recruiting: Where does NIU stand?

It's June and recruiting season is heating up.

Coach Kill's running senior camps like its nobody's business lately, starting off with the in-city-of Chicago camp at St. Rita a couple weeks ago.  NIU's one-day camp schedule for seniors ended today.  It was the 4th session of its type.  It's time to check out these recruits up close, see what they can do and extend offers in the Chicagoland area.

First Offers

One tactic that NIU takes in the recruiting game is offering a guy early.  Too often Big 10 or any other BCS school tend to delay offering a guy until late.  More often than not, this turns a prospect off in the recruiting game.  All high school players want is for a coach to be honest with them with solid promises and offers.

Players in this category

QB Miles Osei (Rivals/Scout) - The dual-threat QB has been offered by both Air Force & Navy as well as Akron.  Ranked the #17 prospect in Illinois by EdgyTim.

ATH Daron Brown (Rivals/Scout) - This high school QB can be put at a variety of positions at the D-I level.

OG Andy Gallik (Rivals) - His stock going nowhere but up with recent offers from Boston College, Illinois & Minnesota.  Ranked the #24 Illinois prospect by EdgyTim.

RB Giorgio Bowers (Rivals/Scout) - The #21 ranked prospect in Illinois by EdgyTim.  Reportedly has grown a bit to 5'10" 215 lbs and his size may make him a good red-zone threat.

MLB Cameron Singily (Rivals/Scout) - Has great size and has been getting looks by some serious BCS schools.

Undersized Running Backs

In addition to Giorgio Bowers, Coach Kill and his staff have been recruiting nationally for the next running back to star for the Huskies.  It's no secret that right now Kill prefers to have smaller, shiftier backs with speed to run in his spread offense.  With no player being able to take the reigns and run with the ball the majority of the time last year, this provides the NIU coaching staff with some serious recruiting ammo: playing time.

RB James Gillum (Rivals/Scout) - a 5'10" 175 lb runner out of Louisiana.

RB Nick Hill (Rivals/Scout) - a 5'7" 185 lb stud out of Michigan ranked as the #10 all-purpose back in the country by Rivals.  Also has offers from Stanford and a few other MAC schools.

RB Jawan Jamison (Rivals/Scout) - the 5'8" 195 lb prospect out of Florida is a big fan that Giants RB Brandon Jacobs was produced by the current coaching staff.  Jamison has offers from Clemson and Wake Forest and is the #11 all-purpose back in the country according to Rivals.

Southern DBs

The south has a lot of speed and it looks like we're trying to shore up our defensive secondary by reaching into the southeast and trying to grab a few prospects.

CB Peniel Jean (Scout) - Has offers from Maryland, Western Michigan & Wisconsin

S E.J. Johnson (Scout) - Has offers from Indiana, Iowa State, Michigan State & Purdue.  Runs a 4.45 40.

S Carvin Johnson (Rivals, Scout) - Has offers from Louisiana Tech, Minnesota & Utah

Super Prospects

If you can't be a prospect's first offer, then it is essential to get in the mix of things early before some other schools decide to jump for a piece of the action.  NIU has made some offers to some pretty highly touted players with offers from BCS schools.  Some players still like Northern, while others have all but completely shut out NIU having a chance to land them.

CB/WR Nick Jones (Rivals/Scout) - This South Carolina prospect impressed the Huskies so much that he was offered after only his Sophomore year.  However, South Carolina has always been a favorite of his with some possible Big 10 offers on the way.  The first offer by NIU was a nice play, but this player has much bigger plans.

QB Sean Robinson (Rivals/Scout) - The 6'5" dual-threat QB from southern Illinois was offered by the Huskies when he had a few offers here and there to some decent schools.  Since then, he has blown up, garnering scholarship offers from Iowa, Wisconsin, Boston College, Louisville and Big 12 North powers Nebraska & Kansas.  Robinson's goal is to obtain an offer from Notre Dame when he attends their camp this month.  His highlight video is jaw-dropping and there has been whispers of Robinson possibly switting to a TE type at the D-I level with his size and speed.

OG Laken Tomlinson (Rivals/Scout) - This is another guy with offers all over the board with the likes of Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State and even Tennessee after him.  NIU offered his teammate LB Louis Trinca-Pasat, but he has sinced committed to Iowa.  I expect Tomlinson to commit to a bigger school as well.
