Six more scholarship players exit the NIU football program

It's a well-known fact that defensive end and resident badass Jake Coffman will be retiring after his junior year in eligibility. He's a military guy and is older, so that's fine. He exceeded expectations and became a fan favorite the past two years. More on him later. Fourth year junior James Jefferies also announced that he was going to hang it up before the season ended.

With the new spring roster released, there were quite a few names of players missing that had at least one year of eligibility left in the Huskie program. There was much speculation that a few of these players had already made up their mind to leave the program; their reasons ranging anywhere from injuries to just falling behind the depth chart.

If you're a 4th year junior and aren't going to see the field in your 5th year, then it makes a good amount of sense for these guys to to make way for the huge freshman (while plugging in sophomore and juniors) class that we are bringing in. I'm actually surprised the majority of these guys lasted this long, considering all of them (except Walker) were recruited by Coach Novak.

Scholarship Players

TE Bryan Beckner - Played in 7 games (1 start) and caught 4 passes for 64 yds this past season. Played on special teams in 2008. In 2007, he played in 10 games (7 starts) but only finished with 1 catch for 9 yds. Was a redshirt junior this past season.

Major: Accounting Haldi-style with over a 3.34 GPA.

WR Tyler Clasey - Has played on special teams exclusively the past 3 years. Was a redshirt junior last season.

Major: Finance with over a 3.25 GPA.

FB Mike Lepper - Only saw action on special teams in 2007. Hasn't played a down since. Was a redshirt junior last season. Was originally a linebacker, but switched to fullback once Kill took over.

Major: Communications

LB Kevin Sabock - The son of former assistant coach Mike Sabock couldn't escape injury, forcing him to retire after his redshirt freshman season.

Major: Physical Education

OG Panan Tense - The former 3-star recruit's start in the International Bowl was only the 2nd of his career as he filled in for RT Adam Kiel. The "utility" offensive lineman was the backup for sophomores RG Joe Pawlak & Kiel throughout the year. Underwhelming performance against USF. Was a redshirt junior last season.

Major: Communication Studies

WR Ron Walker - Was a late signee from Louisiana that never really caught on. Played vs. only Ball State this past season as a redshirt freshman. Odds are he's at Mardi Gras right now.

Major: Liberal arts and science

LB Nick Kamenjarin - Scout team player for 4 years. Not bad considering he's only 5'11" 200 lbs.

Major: Marketing with over a 3.6 GPA.

DB Tyler Knight - Played 6 games in 2008 and only 2 games this past season.

Major: General Studies Check out this tidbit from his bio:

Aspires to be a firefighter. Fan of Barry Sanders and The Ultimate Warrior.

DB John Kremer - Played in all 13 games on special teams. Had 6 tackles (5 solo), but I only remember his punt return turnover vs. EMU and a dumb holding or block in the back call earlier in the year when Tommy Davis had a huge run back.

Major: Exercise Science. Wants to be a physical trainer and open his own gym.
