Huskie Wire | Kill, upgraded to good condition, game planning for Illini
Claeys and Limegrover each said they expected Kill to attend Saturday’s game against Illinois in Champaign. Kill’s progress only has strengthened the thought that Kill soon will be released from Northwestern Memorial and that he will travel to Memorial Stadium.

"I said earlier in the week that I’d be shocked if he didn’t make it to Illinois," Claeys said, "and I’m sticking with that."

Huskie Wire | NIU coaching staff not counting Kill out
"Even if he just comes down, drives down the day of the game and if he just is in the press box, that'll be so much more for him than sitting at home or lying in a hospital bed. ... Being around that is probably as good of medicine as he can have to get him back on track."

Daily Herald | NIU football coach Kill hopes to work Saturday
If Kill's doctor tells him not to coach, Claeys will serve as the acting boss. It's a role he fulfilled on two occasions at Southern Illinois when Kill took ill.

"When I’m out there, you know how close I am to the linebackers, I can’t see their jersey number. I can’t really see the jersey number on the linebackers. I can see like what routes (the other team is) running. I couldn’t really see the call from the sidelines but it’s just blurry. It’s just really blurry."

The NIU Student Association has also orchestrated a fan bus trip that includes a game ticket and a round trip bus ride for $20. As of press time, there were only eight tickets left, which means most Huskie fans will be left to their own means to get to the game.

"The running back's a good player and the quarterback is one of those players that he can get on the corner and run," said Illinois head coach Ron Zook. "They're going to run some zone option with him. He is a good football player, and a good runner. He throws the ball extremely well."

"We've got to limit him, because he makes big plays once he gets out of the pocket," said NIU defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys. "If we don't contain his run-pass threat, we'll be in for a long day, that's for sure."

"They're going to try to big boy us,'' Zook said. "It's going to be important that we go out there ready to play. They're a lot like a Big Ten team. They're physical and big. They want to run the ball, pound it in there and play-action pass.''

The reason Kowal is sitting at home in St. Louis, working out instead of attending classes at a school such as SLU, is because the NCAA is investigating whether he or a school initiated his departure from Northern Illinois before his announced intentions to leave.
