Michigan State assistant Mark Montgomery likely to take NIU's basketball head coaching job

New, 11 comments

Various sources are reporting that he is interviewing with President Peters today to possibly finalize contract stipulations and whatever else, but this almost sounds like a done deal.

Montgomery played for the MSU Spartans from 1988-92. He then went on to play four years for pro teams in Europe.

He knows the MAC: In 1997-98 he joined the Central Michigan coaching staff and helped them turn around to a 20-8 record and a MAC Championship in 2000-01.

Montgomery returned to Michigan State in the 2001-02 season and has been there since. Back in May of 2007 he was promoted to the title of 'Associate Head Coach' under one of the best minds in the game Tom Izzo.

As for Michigan State's success, you really can't understate how they've been to the dance 8 times including final fours in 2005 and 2009.

If this turns out, this could definitely be an amazing hire and a second wonderful job that Jeff Compher has done as the AD in just two short months. Even though he pretty much had all season long to search for candidates.
