Northern Illinois vs Eastern Michigan Eagles Preview

New, 3 comments

No. 18 NIU Huskies take on the EMU Eagles in Dekalb, IL this Saturday.

Danny Wild-USA TODAY Sports

I'm going to keep this preview short, because NIU is almost in a holding pattern until they have to face Ball State at home. Sorry. I mean, just look at this EMU squad, one of the worst in the nation:

Eastern Michigan so far this season:

Sat, Aug 31 1-0 (0-0)
Sat, Sept 7 1-1 (0-0)
Sat, Sept 14 1-2 (0-0)
Sat, Sept 21 1-3 (0-1)
Sat, Oct 5 1-4 (0-2)
Sat, Oct 12 1-5 (0-2)
Sat, Oct 19 1-6 (0-3)

Congrats on barely beating Howard, the 104th ranked team in FCS.

Nobody will ever be a successful coach at EMU apparently. Ron English had the resume being the DC at Louisville but this is just not the school to be a launching pad for any coach. He's in his 5th year and floundering with a 11-44 overall record so far and will likely be fired after the season.

What happened last year?

A 49-7 beatdown in Ypsilanti in which the (missing) Akeem Daniels scored 4 rushing TDs.

Series Record

NIU has a 27-14-2 overall record vs the EMU Eagles. They were really good in the 1950's. The last loss to them was in 2007 because we lost to everybody in 2007.

90th in the nation overall. 74th in rushing and 88th in passing. Not completely bad.

Their RB Bronson Hill ranks 5th in the MAC with over 107 ypg. He's got 752 and 4 TDs on the ground so far this year.

Passing through QB Tyler Benz is about 200 ypg and while he completes 63% of his passes, he's thrown for 9 TDs and 8 INTs. The defense should be able to feast off of this guy.

Their best receiving option is TE Tyreese Russell who has 31 catches for 366 yds and 2 TDs.

Also, this is one hell of a tragedy.

This is where it gets fun. EMU ranks 112th in total defense, 116th in rushing D, 114th in pass efficiency D and 120th in scoring D.

DT Pat O'Connor is a standout with 3 sacks and S Mycal Swaim leads the team with 49 tackles.

Run the ball and run some more. I want to see Cameron Stingily and James Spencer with most of the yards. Give Jordan Lynch some rest.
