The NIU Huskies take down the Kent State Golden Flashes on the road 38-24 to improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The day started off a little slow for the Northern Illinois Huskies as both teams were marred by turnovers and mistakes in the first half, but eventually the Huskies pulled away with the victory the hard way. By the hard way, I mean running the ball down Kent State's throat.

Early Miscues

Looking at the score you think that Kent State actually played the Huskies pretty close. That has some truth to it, as the Golden Flashes kept within single digits the entire game. This had to do with NIU giving up a kickoff return for a TD to Dri Archer right after the first Huskie touchdown. Add in a missed field goal and two interceptions and that is how Kent stayed with the Huskies through the majority of this game. No team seemed to get a foothold at the early part of the game, which makes sense considering it was a road game with wet conditions on the field.

Cameron Stingily is a MAN

37 carries for 266 yds and 2 TDs. Don't know what we would have done without the big guy breaking tackles this week.

This offense

NIU outgained Kent 698 yds to 392 yds because of the miscues stated above. Even though they had their mistakes early, this unit is as well-oiled as it ever has been. 454 yds on the ground is just ridiculous. Lynch himself on a bad day still threw for 244 yds, 2 TDs and rushed the ball for 94 on top of that. Even James Spencer (who?) scored two TDs today.

James Spencer emerges

Where did this guy come from? 2 TDs one rushing and one receiving with 80 yds overall. Both TDs were scored in the 3rd and 4th to help pull the Huskies away.
